Photographs by Anne Leigh Parrish

"These photographs are a study in light — as all photographs are, but the interplay of light, to be specific, in a natural, unscripted setting. I try to capture movement, waves, how water runs, clouds scudding, so that even though the photograph freezes everything in place, the energy is clear beyond the frame.

Though I love black-and-white work, you will notice a distinctly green(ish) shade in "Ecola State Park," made possible by Photoshop editing. Again, this offers a hint of something beyond the frame; in this case, that the water had a distinctly green tinge that day. I simply thought to augment that. I look for abstract patterns the lens can capture, as in "Rivulet" and "Haystack Rock." This prompts the viewer to consider what they're looking at, relying on the title, but then seeing a suggestion of a different identity or reality that could assign itself."
