About:

Craig Sholl lives in Patchogue, NY. He is an avid writer and aspiring photographer. His writings have been published in various magazines with a recent publication in "Allium Journal: A Columbia of Chicago Based-Imprint". His interest in photography, however, began as a young man after his father showed him how to use a Baby Rolleiflex and Graflex/Zeiss lens camera. He is influenced by and admires the photography of Ansel Adams and Vivian Maier.

The Shop Window picture was taken on a cloudy day during the summer, as the light was uniform and more even, with little shadow. My primary camera is a Rolleiflex Automat f/3.5 Zeiss-Tessar Lens. I find this image to be very much in the spirit of Vivian Maier, a photographer I have recently taken an interest in. Her unique gift for composition and accuracy of exposure sets her apart from other street life photographers of her era. Similarly, she used a Rolleiflex camera, initially, and enjoyed waist-level shots giving her a unique perspective on her subjects. In this frame, I waited until the car and bus were parked at the light, and it makes the difference. It leads the viewer to the far side of the windows’ reflection giving it much more impact. Additionally, the reflections of the jewelry and windows showcase, have a certain dreamy perception to them, which I think capitalizes on the photograph's glittery and vibrant themes.

The picture of the white blossom tree was taken in Oakdale, NY at the Bayard Cutting Arboretum. It was a bright sunny day with no clouds, and I spotted the tree almost instantly, as its blossoms were beginning to fall off. I had the feeling it would make a good shot upon taking the picture. I believe this particular frame was taken at f/22 at about 125th of a second. The white blossoms show up well in the final print, and I like the contrasts.

The Seascape was taken with my Nikon f/1.5. I used Infrared film which gives it its enhanced blacks and whites, having darkened clouds and foreground. I used a tripod for this shot and took many frames. In the end, I printed this one, since the crest of the wave falls neatly in the middle. I dodged this portion of the print, thereafter, to give it more contrast, and with the light rays coming down from above, I thought it was a decent shot. It is much grainier than the other images, however, but I tried to enhance its strengths in showing the juxtaposition of the higher and lower values.

All these prints and film were taken and developed by me using an enlarger, chemicals, and developing tank. Enjoy!
