ABOUT THE ART

Coffee Grinder and Glass (1915)

by Juan Gris (1887-1927)

Please find a description of the painting, exhibition history, gallery label, and more on the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art website.

Born in Madrid, Juan Gris drew on his engineering and mechanical drawing studies to infuse his art with mathematical precision. He moved to Paris in 1906, where he became a friend and protégé of Pablo Picasso. Gris is a celebrated figure in Cubism and was arguably the movement's most dedicated theorist until his untimely death from kidney failure at the age of 40. "Coffee Grinder and Glass" is an example of Synthetic Cubism.
