MARK LAMONDA
"And the Buildings Became One with Earth and Man" Series
Issue 15
Mark LaMonda is an artist and writer living in Santa Clarita, California. He earned a Theater Arts degree from Cal State University, Fullerton, and quickly found a job as a computer programmer. He remembers being disciplined by his boss in the '90s for drawing and sketching in meetings. A compromise was struck that he could draw, but not shade, as the noise of his pencil was distracting to others.
His art and writing explore the existential times we live in. He sees a world full of symbols, the inanimate world as alive as that which breathes. He believes that art is another form of language, another way in which truth is communicated. His work often explores trauma, grief, addiction, hope — and the undying belief that you can be reborn. His art has appeared or is forthcoming in Excurses, Wild Roof, and Mad Persona. You can find him at substack.com/@marklamonda
This series of paintings is a reflection on our current times, politically and ecologically. It shows city structures that are alive and struggling, swaying and bent — not what you see is what you get. There is nature, birds, weather, moons, and suns in this series. They have something to say in what is happening. There is trauma in these structures, impacted by the world within and about. These pieces are acrylic and watercolor on paper. “Cottage in the City” also employs some collage elements, with spherical moons having fallen and gathered on the hill.
